8 ways you can go back to your roots today

Life back to the roots was a free life that was pleasantly slow and refreshingly light. The world was not a technology magnet and people were not isolated in a populated city. People lived for the moment. But instead of living in the nostalgia of what there was and isn’t anymore, here are 8 ways you can go back to your roots today.

1. Strangers on train journeys

Back in the days, flights were expensive and not very popular so people took trains for long journeys which were always more economical, eco-friendly and gave amazing views throughout as compared to planes. However, today times have reversed and to top that people are glued to their cell phones and laptops while traveling, even on holidays. Instead, like old times, take a train journey once in a while and interact with strangers, share a laugh about stories, have food with them and make the journey a memorable part of their trip.

2. Altering the life of clothes

Earlier, clothes were passed on for generations, whether it was a saree or a wedding dress of a mother to her daughter or plain clothes from a cousin to another. The current society is a throw-away society. It either buys cheap quality clothes or 1 time wear outfits and discards them in no time to keep up with the latest trends. One needs to change this pattern of throwing away one-time used clothes by turning towards tailors who can help them think of better ways of altering the look of the clothes and fixing small cuts. Shift from throwing to reusing in a more sustainable way.

3. Holiday pampering

Gen Z always had a fixed trip down to grandparent’s house who would wait to see their grandchildren, pamper them with lots of love, good food and hand knit sweaters for them. Keep some time to get spoiled.

4. Watch, play, read repeat

Give Netflix a break and watch few shows like Mahabharata on Doordarshan, play gali cricket, marbles, gilli danda and indulge in comics.

5. Mangoes and trespassing

Old times adventures involved climbing on trees to break mangoes in one’s own localities and trespassing into other localities. If you find a tree in your locality that bears fruit try your hand at patiently plucking some. Sabr ka fal meetha hota hai.

6. ATM (any time music)

Not everybody had cell phones and earphones didn’t exist until a few years ago. The ‘sound of music’ anytime anywhere was antakshari. ‘Play’ songs with your friends while traveling and at light social gatherings.

7. Postcards

In the olden days, postcards were sent to update loved ones of wellbeing and whereabouts from far and near. In the world of whatsapp messages send someone a beautiful and rather vintage postcard. Post crossing is a website through which you can mail multiple postcards to random members through post and get many in return. Post a message offline once in a while.

8. Organic alternatives

We use a lot of chemical substances these days of which many are or can be hazardous to us and the environment in the long run for example plastic. However, there are ways to avoid plastic right from using cloth bags for vegetables to using bamboo toothbrushes, using milk directly from the dairy instead of buying sealed milk from the supermarkets and drinking from steel bottles instead of the use and throw plastic bottles.

The words ‘good old days’ comes with a feeling of nostalgia. Following these ways will lead you to a more natural life, to a more blissful life.
