What are the winter months in the national park?

Bandipur National Park is best visited during the winter season between October -March. This time you can spot many migratory birds living in action is a rich enchantment. Bandipur can also be visited during the monsoon season between July and September where the park looks mesmerising.

The rain enhances the beauty of the national park by making the whole place seem even more greener. Summers are comparatively warmer especially during the day when the sun shines brightly. However, it’s the best time to spot animals and a plethora of colourful birds.

It was once the private hunting grounds of the erstwhile Maharajas nestled at the foothills of the Nilgiris, Bandipur has had a long tryst with tigers. One of the thirty reserves identified across the country to save the tiger and its habitat, it’s also one of the last refuges of the endangered Asiatic wild elephant.

Apart from the two famed residents, a number of other endangered species such as sloth bears, gaurs, Indian rock pythons, jackals, muggers, and four-horned antelopes can be spotted in this national park. Bandipur also shelters sambar, mouse deer, chital, sloth bear, and the rare flying lizard.

Over 200 species of birds and a diversity of flora add to its attraction. Bandipur also supports a wide range of timber trees including teak, rosewood, sandalwood, Indian-laurel, Indian Kino tree, giant clumping bamboo, etc. Overall this place is a sheer treat to all who love to be with nature and animals.

Gopalaswamy Betta, Bandipur National Park:

This park is also known as the Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta, this majestic and lofty hill lying in the core area of the Bandipur National Park. Located in the Chamarajanagar district of the state of Karnataka, at the height of 1,450 metres above sea level; the name of the hills gets the prefix Himavad since the mountain is surrounded by mist all year round.

Himavad in the native language of Kannada means fog, while Betta in the same language means mountain. This Park is frequented by wildlife, especially elephants. This hill is home to a dense forest and is also the highest peak in the park.

The main attraction is its elephant safari rides. Another popular tourist destination here is the Gopalaswamy Temple located on the hill. This temple is dedicated to Lord Venugopala Swamy, who is considered to be one of the incarnations of the Hindu God Krishna. The hill thus is deemed to be a place of worship and penance and holds great religious and historical importance other than being an important sightseeing spot.

Gopalaswamy Betta is also known for its picturesque views of the surrounding hills. Visitors are particularly fond of the spectacular views of the sunrises and sunsets from the top of the hill.

Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve:

The sprawling park is in the midst of lush green hills of Nilgiris in the Western Ghats, Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve is an International Biosphere reserve that was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012. It includes the Mudumalai, Mukurthi, Wayanad and Bandipur national parks.

The biosphere encompasses an area of 5,520 sqm km and is spread across the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. The best way to explore the wildlife of the biosphere reserve is trekking where you can enjoy not only the sights of animals from a close distance but also the splendid views of the Western Ghats.

A major part of the Nilgiri biosphere is reserved under Project Tiger and Project Elephant. Hence, it is an essential habitat for two of the most important species of fauna in India. The elephants and tigers remain the unmatched attraction of the place.

Apart from this, the reserve is famous for the Indian leopard (and black panther), gaur, Indian elephant, mongoose, Malabar giant squirrel, lion-tailed macaque, grey langur and Nilgiri tahr. The national park is also famous for its flora which includes a variety of plants and orchids. Out of these, a few can only be found at Nilgiri biosphere reserves.

Along with Bandipur, you can also visit Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Mudumalai National Park, BRT Wildlife Sanctuary and Rajiv Gandhi National Park, all these parks are government undertaken. Both Karnataka and Kerala governments take care of the rare species of both flora and fauna.

If you are at Bandipur, visiting Ooty is a must. This place is a haven for chocolate lovers and tea enthusiasts. Amidst clouds, mountains and tea gardens you will find a serene beauty. Try their different types of teas and chocolates and enjoy your trip.

This ends the total Bandipur National Park trip, hope you enjoy reading the blog and now have some idea about the place and what needs to pack.
