We all love our winter clothes. jackets, coats, parkas. They are beautiful, but expensive. Also, over the years, we tend to get sentimentally attached to our holiday season clothes. Hence, it is very important to take good care of them so they stay with us for a long time. Especially in tropical countries, where the woolies emerge from their storage only during the winter season or when you’re packing for a visit to a cooler country. So here are a few tips to keep your winter clothes as good as new:
Wash Care:
Woollen coats tend to catch a lot of lint. Get rid of the lint with either a lint remover or a coat brush, which is more effective. Brushing your coats also gets rid of the surface soil and dry dirt. Follow the wash care instructions that come with the apparel. Most coats and jackets should be dry cleaned. In case you are looking for a cheaper alternative, you can hand wash it by simply dipping the jacket in water with a mild cleaning agent or a shampoo. But never use scalding hot water or bleach on wool items. Mild detergents like Ezee and Genteel work wonders. Remove any stains and spills as soon as possible with a soft damp cloth. Do not rub it on your coat. Instead, blot the stain out gently.
Storage:
Before packing them to store for the summers, make sure that they are properly washed as bacteria thrive on sweat and food particles. Empty wool coat and pant pockets after every wearing to keep them from sagging or losing shape. Store it in a cool & dry place with Silica Gel sachets when not in use. Coat covers are really important. Always store your valuable coats and jackets in coat covers as they protect the coats from dirt and moisture and unnecessary manhandling. The jackets and coats last for 10 to 15 years if maintained cautiously.
Airing:
Remember to check on your coats and jackets every 4-6 months and air them in sunlight to get rid of any sort of storage smell or moisture.
Getting rid of wrinkles:
During holiday packing, when the winter jackets and coats finally emerge from their hiding places in cupboards and storage boxes, they tend to be all wrinkled and mushed up. Obviously, you are not walking out of your house with those unpresentable creases! Just straighten the jacket out and let it hang for a couple of days, or better yet, wear it a few times before you are ready to wear it outdoors or pack it up for your next vacation. This is indeed the easiest of all. Try on a few accessories to go with your coats and jackets or just take a dozen selfies to check out how great you look! Or you can roll up the garment and place it under your mattress and when you take it out in an hour or so, it should be free from wrinkles.
Commercial Sprays:
Many commercial sprays are known to get rid of wrinkles effectively. They are quick and hassle-free. So when you are in a time crunch, you can depend on one of these handy helpers!
