Preparing for a winter backpacking trip
Now that you have fixed your destination it’s time to plan and pack accordingly.
Planning a backpacking trip with friends is fun but at the same time, you must adhere to basic rules.
Travelling to a colder region or snow-led places you must religiously follow the 3 layers rule. First of all, it is winter hence you need to stay warm and cosy. Weather can affect greatly therefore it is advisable to protect yourself properly and without any discomfort.
The three-layer rule for clothes: Winter layering tips
Clothing is the foremost thing to ensure on a backpacking trip. Always stick to the Three-layer rule.
The base layer is the most important layer of your winter clothing. It is important that this layer is of good quality, skin-friendly and comfortable. Kosha has a host of moisture-wicking fabric like merino wool thermals as your base layers. These thermals will absorb the sweat and keep you dry.
It is important that you invest in this layer, as it is closer to your skin. Borrowing or renting will not help you and can cause you unwanted skin diseases. Better to own one to save from trouble.
The second is the middle layer which is usually a sweatshirt to retain the heat. Usually, it is worn to add a bit of warmth and help you stay comfortable even in an extreme climate. Depending on your temperature endurance you can add or subtract this layer. It is advisable to wear this layer when you are travelling to colder regions or snowy places.
Solid coloured hoodies can help you pull off in any style and especially when you are travelling you need to be effortlessly stylish. These hoodies are designed as a commuter collection which is ideal for any travel. Layer it over the base layer and keep the cold temperature at bay.
Kosha’s hoodies are equipped with 6 pockets of varying sizes with zippers. 2 front hand pockets, 1 concealed pocket for your phone with an earphone outlet, 2 larger pockets for documents, tabs or snacks, 1 chest pocket for cards or passports.
They are made to keep your travelling hassle-free. These pockets are particularly essential when you are travelling, it would be easy to carry necessary things when needed.
The third is the outer layer which is the waterproof /windproof/snowproof winter coat. These outer shell coats are very breathable and ventilated to allow sweat to escape as moisture vapour instead of trapping it underneath the fabric.
The outer layer is the shield to protect you from all the harshness. This layer is the last layer and an important one. Make sure you invest right in this layer. It is advisable to carry your own winter gear to be prepared for any condition.
Eat and drink smartly:
Whenever you are travelling, take care of your health properly. You don’t want to fall sick and ruin your happy moments. Make sure you eat and drink properly. Always carry your essential medicines. Keep the body hydrated and eat every few hours to stay warm.
Choose food like bread, oatmeal, dried fruits that contain carbs, good fat, and boost energy all day. Eat a fuller meal more than your routine before going to bed which boosts metabolism and keeps you warm.
Drink tons of water and carry thermal bottles containing hot cider, chocolate or soup to sip here and there. Carry a bottle and it is better if you buy mineral water rather than drinking local.
At times local water doesn’t suit and causes more trouble. Even though you will try local foods, it is always best to carry some foods that are handy and you can compensate. Choose your food place very carefully as it can lead to your well being while you are travelling. If you are not so sure about any food, better not try it.
Choose the right campsite:
Try to set the camp in an area covered with trees to stop the wind from cooling your body. Avoid high altitude areas like mountains and lower altitude areas like valleys as both can be cool.
In the case of wide-open plateaus choose a rocky land to block the wind even in one direction. Place the camp in the east face so that sunrise warms you up in the early morning.
Your tent must be of good quality to protect you from any harsh weather or sudden change. Make it as a good investment, if renting make sure they are of good qualities.
Keep your tent cosy and warm. Carry a portable heater if necessary and never forget to carry light. Extra sheet or cover to keep you warm and cosy. You need to rest well, thus it is important to make your tent sleepable. Your campsite should be in such a place which will help you to travel and also give you some solitude. Keep necessary arrangements to keep bugs and insects at bay.
Change before you go to bed:
There are great chances to fall asleep in the tent after a long day of hiking without changing your clothes. The moisture from the sweat is only going to make you chilly. So never forget to put on a nice, fresh set of dry clothes before jumping on the bed and see what a difference it can make.
Going to bed in fresh clothes will obviously boost your sleep. Make sure you have a good quality sleeping bag. At the end of the day when you snuggle, it should keep you warm and snuggly. Travelling will make you tired and the last thing you want is to come to a place which is not cosy.
Prepare your bed warm to have a good night sleep. Sleeping is important as it will help you rejuvenate. Usually, people rent their sleeping bags but it is good to own one to avoid any diseases and for cleanliness.
Exercise before bed:
Warm up your body and increase the blood flow by simple exercises like jumping jacks, squats or burpees. One pro tip is to do crunches when you feel cold inside your sleeping bag without stepping out of bed. Exercise just enough to get you warmed, but not enough to sweat.
Accessories to pack on a trip:
Carry a pair of liner socks and gloves to toast the entire body. In case of extreme cold, layer them with other socks or gloves to enhance the warmth. Bring two pairs of Sleeping pads to spend a cosy and comfortable night.
Don’t forget to carry a hot water bottle to place inside the sleeping bag to make a snuggly bed. Exercise and wiggle the fingers of your hands and legs to warm up your body and for boosting your blood circulation.
Carry your medicines and necessary equipment so that it can help you in need. Extra sleepers, dry foods, sunglasses, sunscreen are the most important things that should be carried.
If you are planning for photography make sure you carry extra battery packs, often in colder regions better idea early due to temperature. Must carry very camera gear to protect your camera. For mobile phones, you must carry power back up as there may not be a possibility of power. Keep your important contact lists handy for emergencies. Try to take bright coloured clothes, cotton material for comfort.
If you are renting your sleeping bag, put your bed sheet as the base layer and then sleep to avoid skin problems. Always keep your shoes dry, never wear anything wet, it will bring more trouble and make you ill. While in the snow if by chance the snow enters, make sure you clean it immediately or there will be a possibility of a snow bite.
Always cover your skin apart from sunscreen do not use any other cream in colder regions it will burn your skin. Use your moisturiser at night to keep your body moist. Keep a lip balm handy as the cold wind can affect your lips. Always keep yourself dry while travelling or it may cause illness. Whenever you feel sick take it seriously and attend immediately.
