Winter is possibly one of the best times to travel, be it to a warmer place to soak up on the much-missed sun, or to a colder place to experience the amazing joy of being amidst the snow. Whatever you may choose as your destination, the important things to keep in mind for your winter travels are actually NOT TRUE! Confused? Well worry not, here are the most common winter travel myths, busted:
1. The thicker your coat is the warmer you’ll be.
No, not really. Remember when they taught us in Physics that more layers trap more heat? Well, the principle is the same in the case of woollens as well. Thus, layering is the key to keeping yourself warm. A few well-layered sweaters will provide much better protection from the cold than a bulky coat.
2. Walking around in the winter gives you a cold.
Next time your mother says that you have a cold because of the walk you took in the night, stop her right there as it is not true. Cold, since always has been because of the surge of viruses. Since we end up spending more time inside the house, with the windows closed, our pets with us and taking fewer showers, that would lead to the outbreak of cold. So next time, go out more!
3. Sunscreen is for summers.
Sunscreen is for whenever we step out into the sun. Regardless of the weather, apply your sunscreen generously before going outdoors. Especially with the increasing depletion of the ozone layer, it is essential to always have sunscreen on or it could lead to serious skin diseases.
4. We lose most heat through our heads.
Um, no. Scientists have proven that the amount of heat lost from a particular body part is equal to the proportion of that part to our body. Our head only forms 7% of our body thus, only 7% of heat is lost from there. But that doesn’t mean that we stop protecting our heads. The head is an extremity and hence important, so layer up with those ear muffs and caps!
5. Drinking alcohol will help you get warm.
Drinking alcohol will only give you a buzz and maybe lower your inhibitions, it will definitely not keep you warm. In fact, in the long term, it may actually decrease your immunity, leaving you susceptible to feeling colder and being prone to diseases. Tsk. Tsk. But don’t worry you can still enjoy drinking during the holidays like the saying goes, “everything in moderation”.
6. Fit as much as you can during a trip.
Of course, you want to visit all the places you have in your itinerary, but want it or not, you will eventually end up missing out on a few. And that’s okay! Rushing off to see one monument to another may give you the ticks on your checklist, but it will definitely not give you the experience you were looking for. Instead, take a deep breath and enjoy the beautiful surroundings you are around, this will form the memory of your trip, not the time you spent shuttling around from place to place.
So be informed about your next trip, your next experience, your next vacation, and remember that not everything people say is true!
