Winter Destinations : January to May

Somewhere in the world, it’s winter right now. If you love the chills, snow treks or just leisure travel over lots of hot chocolate, read on. We have curated a monthly list of winter travel destinations, including must-do activities.

January : Ice Festivals & Ski Slopes

Harbin, China: The “Ice City,” hosts one of the world’s largest ice festivals, the Harbin International Ice Festival with gigantic ice castles, a 3D light show, and Northern Lights-themed ice slides. Every year there is a different theme. The temperature of Harbin in January ranges between -26°C to -13.5°C.

Switzerland, Europe: It is a winter wonderland. If you love skiing, Zurich, Geneva, Lucerne, and Verbier will be a dream destination for you. The temperature of Switzerland in January ranges between -2°C to 2.9°C.

The Alps, Europe: Hardcore hikers, if you think you can hike in -25 degrees Celsius then the Alps is your calling. The temperature of The Alps in January ranges between -5°C to 4°C.

Ski Resorts in Japan: There are more than 500 resorts across the country most of which are relaxing hot-springs as well. The temperature of Ski resorts in January ranges between 2°C to 10°C.

February : Snow Festivals & Snow Sports

Vail, USA: Have you ever watched a snowboarding competition? If not, book your tickets for Vail’s annual Burton U.S. Open Snowboarding Championship 2020 and enjoy free musical performances, late-night shows, parties, and other events with it. The temperature of Vail in February ranges between -13°C to 1°C.

Quebec, Canada: This place has a winter carnival that features ice canal races, night parades, snow sculptures, entertainment, and pyrotechnics. Hotel de Glace is the icy cherry on the cake, it is North America’s only ice hotel created with 500 tons of ice and 30,000 tons of snow. The temperature of Quebec in February ranges between -13°C to -4°C.

Odori Park, Japan: The Sapporo Snow Festival in Japan has extraordinary structures like full-size temples made from snow and ice stretching across approximately 1.5 kilometres accompanied by Hokkaido-specialty gourmet options. The temperature of Odori in February ranges between -7°C to 0°C.

March : Immerse yourself in nature

Jasper National Park, Canada: This UNESCO World Heritage Site has all that you could do to connect with nature, from drinking water from the 2nd largest glacier-fed lake in the world to going to its deepest accessible canyon to explore frozen waterfalls and ice caves. The Park also has great winter sport activities and picnic spots. The temperature of Jasper National Park in March ranges between -13°C to -1°C.

Lake Tahoe, USA: While March is one of the hottest months in India, California can offer you spring skiing in nice goggle tan weather. Enjoy a cold beer on outdoor patios & decks in between storms. The temperature of Lake Tahoe in March ranges between -2°C to 10°C.

The months of April and May are months of transition in most parts of the world. However, there are a few places that still experience snow, sometimes unpredictably. They are:

April : a dose of touristy classics

Casper, USA: Casper is known for having snow until the end of April, having unpredictable winter storms and rainstorms. If you go there in April 2020 you will also be able to attend CHER’s “Here We Go Again Tour” on the 24th. The temperature of Casper in April ranges between 0°C to 14°C.

Mt. Rushmore, USA: This region experiences the highest amount of snowfall in the month of April. Other than visiting the place to see the 60-foot high faces of 4 US presidents intricately carved out of a granite mountainside, you can go skiing, snowmobiling or even go on snowshoes into the fresh powder of the forest of Black Hills National Forest. The temperature of Mt. Rushmore in April ranges between 0°C to 10°C.

May : Escape the summer heat with some of the world’s coldest regions

Yakutsk, Russia: This is the coldest city in the world as its temperatures can drop till -50 degrees celsius. But in May, the temperatures are about 0 degrees Celsius. You can climb a 100 m UNESCO world heritage site, Lena Pillars, and visit a lot of museums and historical landmarks. The temperature of Yakutsk in May ranges between 1°C to 14°C.

Amazing India: Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh and Gulmarg in Kashmir: These places are open for skiing and heli-skiing respectively, in May. The temperature of Rohtang Pass in May ranges between -2°C to 18°C and in Gulmarg is 9.4°C to 30°C.

Drass, Jammu & Kashmir: Drass is the 2nd coldest inhabited place in the world. You will find a war memorial, made by Indians for the soldiers who died in the 1999 Kargil War, and many monasteries. The temperature of Drass in May ranges between 1°C to 14°C.
